Charlottesville Skate Park Honored as “Best New Facility” by Virginia Recreation & Park Society

CHARLOTTESVILLE, VA - The Charlottesville Skate Park, located in McIntire Park, was named “Best New Facility” by the Virginia Recreation & Park Society (VRPS) at its annual conference. The VRPS awards program honors individuals, departments and organizations throughout Virginia who have demonstrated excellence in any of several areas during the previous year.  Judged by a jury of its peers, Charlottesville Parks and Recreation received an award in the Best New Facility, Parks, Playgrounds, Blueways, Greenways and Trails, population 25,001 – 50,000, category for the Charlottesville Skate Park.

Vic Garber, Deputy Director, Parks & Recreation calls this award a big win for the Department and we should all be proud of it.

“During these crazy times of COVID-19 it is sometimes difficult to see the great things we do for the community and the many ways we change the lives of the individuals we serve," said Garber. "The skate park is a true asset to our community in so many ways!”

Community members like Neil Hughes have also enjoyed the skate park.

“What makes this skate park unique is the mixture of community support and professional level management," said Hughes. "The cement will never change, and I hope the environment doesn't either. Amazing time every time.”

The Charlottesville Skate Park, which opened in 2019, features approximately 33,000 square feet consisting of the plaza (18,000 square feet) and transition bowl area (15,000 square feet). The plaza has authentic urban elements with color and textures that create a user-friendly and legal space for skateboarding, BMX, and other wheeled activities. The Plaza also has an area for bands and special events. The transition bowl area features the Competition bowl, Butterfly bowl, and the Flow bowl.

In addition to the open skating areas, Charlottesville Parks & Recreation offers a variety of learn to skate programs, camps, and individual lessons for all ages and abilities. Total cost for the skate park was 2.1 million and was funded by the City of Charlottesville Capital Improvement Program along with a grant from the Tony Hawk Foundation. The park is open 8:00 a.m. until dusk 7 days a week.
