City Activates Emergency Snow Routes in Advance of Winter Storm

CHARLOTTESVILLE, VA –  In preparation for forecasted winter weather expected to impact the City beginning Saturday, January 24, 2026, City Manager Samuel Sanders, Jr. has approved Level 1 Snow Operations and activated the City’s designated Emergency Snow Routes, effective 9:00 AM Saturday, January 24.

All vehicles must be removed from Emergency Snow Routes by 9:00 AM. Vehicles remaining after that time may be towed to support safe and effective snow removal and ensure access for emergency vehicles and public travel. The incoming storm system is projected to impact the region from Saturday through Sunday, with forecasts calling for eight inches or more of snow

Designated Emergency Snow Routes include:

  • Market Street (Old Preston Avenue to 9th Street NE)
  • High Street (Preston Avenue to 9th Street NE)
  • Water Street (Ridge Street to 10th Street NE)
  • 2nd Street West (Market Street to Water Street)
  • 4th Street East (Market Street to Water Street)
  • West Main Street (Ridge Street to JPA)
  • University Avenue (JPA to Rugby Road)

These corridors typically experience higher volumes of on-street parking and have narrower travel lanes, which can significantly hinder snow removal. Keeping these routes clear allows crews to plow more efficiently and improves safety for emergency response and the traveling public.

The City recognizes this designation may create temporary inconvenience for downtown residents, visitors, and employees. At this time, Emergency Snow Routes are expected to remain in effect through Tuesday, January 27, 2026, though restrictions may be lifted earlier or extended based on weather conditions and operational needs.

Complimentary Parking
To reduce impacts and support compliance, the City will offer complimentary parking at the Market Street Garage and Water Street Garage beginning Friday, January 23 at 6:00 PM through Tuesday, January 27 at 8:00 AM. Downtown residents and employees are encouraged to use these garages during this time.
