Open House: Locust Avenue Water Line Replacement Project
CHARLOTTESVILLE, VA – The Charlottesville Department of Utilities is hosting an open house for the Locust Avenue Water Line Replacement Project, scheduled to begin later this month. The community is invited to stop by Burnley-Moran Elementary School on Tuesday, June 10, from 4 PM to 6:30 PM to learn more about the project and understand what to expect while the street is under construction. Light refreshments will be available.
The water main along Locust Avenue was installed in 1924, and due to its age, has experienced a steady increase in breaks and leaks with a notable rise to one leak per year in the last decade and three leaks in 2021 alone. This project is part of the Department of Utilities’ ongoing replacement of outdated infrastructure throughout the entire water distribution system and will improve service by bringing the water system in the area up to current industry standards, significantly enhancing system reliability, and reducing the risk of future service disruptions.
Replacement of the water main will occur in two phases along Locust Avenue from East High Steet to Locust Lane. Phase one will take place between East High Street and the Route 250 bridge and is scheduled to begin on June 16, 2025. Phase two will take place between the Route 250 bridge and Locust Lane and is scheduled to begin in the summer of 2026. All efforts will be made to minimize inconvenience during both phases of construction. This open house is a great opportunity to ask questions about the project and speak with representatives from the Department of Utilities, the City’s traffic engineer, the engineering firm Whitman, Requardt & Associates, LLP., and the contractor hired to perform the replacement, Southeast Connections, LLC.
The Department of Utilities is committed to providing first-rate utility services, and the Locust Avenue Water Line Replacement Project will contribute to strengthening the long-term sustainability, resiliency, and efficiency of the water distribution system for all of Charlottesville and will help ensure the community continues to receive reliable, high-quality water.
