2023 Sister City Travel Scholarships – Application period now open!

CHARLOTTESVILLE, VA – The Charlottesville Sister Cities Commission is pleased to announce it has opened the application cycle for this year’s Travel Scholarship Program! $8000 in funding has been allocated to help support local citizens who seek to visit any of our Sister and/or Friendship Cities, in service to the CSCC mission. CSCC Travel Scholarships are especially designed to assist those who may face financial challenges to covering the cost of travel.

The Charlottesville Sister Cities Commission has a goal of making participation in the City's International Sister Cities program as inclusive and diverse as possible. At present, individuals who participate in traveling delegations or students engaged in exchange programs or organized trips to one of Charlottesville's Sister Cities (Winneba, Ghana; Besançon, France; Poggio a Caiano, Italy; or our "Friendship City" Huehuetenango, Guatemala), typically have to pay out of pocket for their travel costs. Since this often poses a financial barrier to participation for low-income or working class residents, high school students, etc., CSCC created the travel scholarship program to help lower such barriers and enable a broader cross-section of community residents to realize the benefits of Sister City travel opportunities.

Scholarship Limits and Conditions: The CSCC has allocated up to $8,000 for Travel Scholarships for the 2023 year. Local residents can apply for up to $1,000/each to participate in Sister City travel experiences during the coming year. Scholarship recipients must cover all travel costs above and beyond the scholarship amount they are awarded. Application: Submit completed applications by email to cvillesistercities@gmail.com or mail to Charlottesville Sister Cities Commission c/o Kyna Thomas, P.O. Box 911, Charlottesville, VA 22902. Applications are limited to a maximum of two pages.

Deadline: 5:00PM Weds, March 29, 2023. The CSCC will notify applicants of award status on or before April 7, 2023.

For more information, see the “Travel Scholarships” tab on the CSCC website at https://www.cvillesistercities.org/
