Charlottesville Bike Month to be Bigger Than Ever in May
CHARLOTTESVILLE, VA – May is National Bike Month, promoted by the League of American Bicyclists, and celebrated in communities from coast to coast. Established in 1956, National Bike Month is a chance to showcase the many benefits of bicycling and encourage more folks to give biking a try.
To celebrate Charlottesville Bike Month this year, local businesses and groups have teamed up with the City to offer a month-long series of events where people of all ages can learn about bike safety, practice skills, and simply get motivated to spend more time in the saddle.
Below are some of the events open to the community in May:
Fridays After 5 Concert Series, every Friday in May at the Ting Pavilion:
- Concession proceeds benefit a different local bike-related organization each week
- Free valet bike parking on-site right at the venue entrance
Safe Routes to School / for Families & Kids:
- 6th Annual JMRL How-To Festival, featuring bike safety and ebike info — May 4th, 10 AM - 1 PM at the Central Library
- Family Bike Day — May 5th, 12 PM - 2 PM at Blue Wheel Bicycles in IX Park
- Bike 2 School Day — May 8th
- After School Program bike ride events & ebike demos
For Adults & Businesses:
- Riders of all experience levels can find a group ride with a participating local bike shop
- Businesses can enter a fun challenge to win prizes for their staff, and commuters can find rides and earn rewards, all within the ConnectingVA mobile app from Rideshare
- Take advantage of swag stations along Main Street and University Avenue during Bike to Work Day — May 17th
“Our goal is to help people build confidence, feel empowered to commute by bike, and to get community members of all ages excited about doing something healthy for themselves and the environment," said Tommy Safranek, City of Charlottesville Bike and Pedestrian Coordinator. "We’re proud to offer so many great events and activities during Cville Bike Month this year to get kids, families and individuals motivated to spend more time on their bikes this summer and for years to come.”
