Human Rights Commission Seeking Public Input
CHARLOTTESVILLE, VA – The Charlottesville Human Rights Commission (HRC) will be holding its Annual Planning Meeting in March. At this meeting, the HRC will select focus areas for its work in the coming year and identify steps to achieve its goals related to the selected focus areas. The HRC is currently conducting a public survey to collect feedback about which topics related to civil and human rights are most important to the community at this time.
The Human Rights Commission is a volunteer group of individuals appointed by City Council to act as a strong advocate for justice and equal opportunity by providing citywide leadership and guidance in the area of civil and human rights. The HRC also reviews City policies and provides recommendations to City Council for changes in policy that promote and protect human rights.
Last year, the Human Rights Commission selected housing as its focus area and conducted several initiatives centered around preserving and increasing diversity, equity, and affordability in housing. These included attending meetings of local housing organizations, hosting experts to discuss legislative priorities, and writing recommendations for City Council.
Those who complete the survey can choose a priority from a list of possible topics identified by current members of the HRC or offer a new idea related to the mission of the HRC. The HRC commits to considering ideas presented by the public carefully as it plans its work for the coming year.
The survey will close at noon on Monday, March 4th. The Human Rights Commission Annual Planning Meeting will be held on Saturday, March 9th, 9:30 AM—4 PM.
