Community Walk Scheduled in Honor of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Day
CHARLOTTESVILLE, VA – This weekend, to celebrate the life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. and the 60th anniversary of the passage of the Civil Rights Act of 1964, the City of Charlottesville Office of Human Rights and Bicycle and Pedestrian Advisory Committee are partnering with the Albemarle County Office of Equity and Inclusion, the University of Virginia Office for Sustainability, and others to organize a community walk through historically significant sites in the heart of Charlottesville.
The walk will encompass a variety of sites, including several locations that were featured in the Virginia Green Book, a travelers’ guide that was published between the late 30s until the late 60s in response to pervasive racism and discrimination. This walk will offer an opportunity to learn about local history and engage in dialogue with community members about the ways in which this history impacts life in Charlottesville today.
The walk will depart from the Albemarle County Office Building (401 McIntire Rd) at 12 PM on Sunday, January 14th. The full walk route will be just under 3 miles in length, and attendees are invited to adjust the length to suit their needs. Registration is not required, and everyone is welcome!
