2026 Charlottesville Pothole Blitz

CHARLOTTESVILLE, VA – After the most recent winter weather event, and as the weather begins to warm up, the Charlottesville Department of Public Works will begin performing road maintenance. As part of this effort, Public Works encourages community members to help in our "Pothole Blitz," which will run from February 23 to March 13, by reporting potholes in need of repair. If you see a pothole, take note of its location and report it to the City as we work to improve the safety and condition of our streets.

Leaf Collection Service Restart

CHARLOTTESVILLE, VA – Due to recent winter weather, the City's curbside leaf collection program was delayed. Service is scheduled to resume starting on Monday, February 23, and one final service round will be provided City-wide. Community members should have their leaves placed and ready for collection by 7:00 AM on February 23, regardless of their assigned collection zone. Curbside collection will be provided throughout the City until all collection zones are completed for one final pickup.

Public Meeting Notice: Charlottesville-Gordonsville 230kV Rebuild

CHARLOTTESVILLE, VA – Dominion Energy is committed to providing the reliable, affordable and increasingly clean energy that powers your every day as energy. Your area, as well as other communities throughout Virginia, is experiencing growing energy demands.

To meet this increased demand, 20 miles of existing single-circuit 230 kilovolt (kV) electric transmission line between our Charlottesville and Gordonsville substations needs to be rebuilt and reconductored as double-circuit 230kV structures.

This project is currently in the development stage, with plans to file an application with the Virginia State Corporation Commission (SCC) in early 2026. Consider joining us to learn more about this project at our two community meetings:

Temporary Capacity Constraints at Market Street Parking Garage; Spaces Available at Water Street Parking Garage

CHARLOTTESVILLE, VA – The City of Charlottesville is advising community members that parking capacity at the Market Street Parking Garage is currently reduced due to a combination of planned maintenance work, safety precautions, and recent winter weather impacts. Motorists are encouraged to utilize the Water Street Parking Garage, where ample parking spaces are available.

At this time, approximately 150 parking spaces at the Market Street Parking Garage are temporarily unavailable due to a combination of factors. These include planned renovation and repair work currently underway as part of routine maintenance to preserve the long-term safety and functionality of the garage, as well as recent snow and ice accumulation that has limited access to rooftop parking areas.

Due to safety considerations, snow removal on garage rooftops is limited during heavier accumulations. In these cases, snow is managed through ice treatment and allowed to melt naturally as conditions improve.

City staff are coordinating closely with contracted repair crews to manage renovation work efficiently and limit impacts to parking availability. Some aspects of the work are dependent on construction schedules and weather conditions, which can affect timing.

Parking remains readily available at the Water Street Parking Garage, and drivers are being directed there when the Market Street facility reaches capacity. The City encourages residents, employees, and visitors to consider Water Street as a convenient and accessible alternative during this period.

The City appreciates the community’s patience and understanding as this work continues and will provide updates as conditions improve and parking capacity is restored.

Curbside Trash and Recycling Update

CHARLOTTESVILLE, VA – Due to the recent winter weather event, some trash and recycling collection routes in the City of Charlottesville experienced incomplete or missed service.

Because of resource constraints, there will be no make-up collections for missed trash or recycling service. The City has directed its collection contractor to collect any contained overflow during residents’ next regularly scheduled trash or recycling pickup.

Residents who need immediate options for excess recycling are encouraged to use the Rivanna McIntire Recycling Center, located at 611 McIntire Road. The facility is free for Charlottesville residents. Additional information is available at rivannasolidwaste.org.

The City apologizes for the inconvenience and appreciates the community’s patience as normal service resumes following the impacts of the winter weather.

Curbside Trash and Recycling Schedule Update

CHARLOTTESVILLE, VA – City of Charlottesville residential curbside trash and recycling collection resumed on Wednesday January 28, for the Wednesday collection route. Service for Thursday and Friday's collection routes will remain on schedule and be completed as normal. Evolving road conditions with the very cold temperatures overnight may cause conditions that could cause portions of streets not to be collected. The collection contractor will collect any contained overflow trash from these missed segments on next week’s collection.

Christmas Tree Pick-Up Scheduled for Week of January 12, 2026

CHARLOTTESVILLE, VA – Christmas Tree pick-up service will be the week of January 12, 2026.

Trees must be at the curb by 7:00 AM on Monday, January 12 for collection that week and be free of ALL decorations, stands, and nails. This program is for Christmas trees only; no yard waste will be collected.

As in years past, trees will be taken to Darden Towe Park for chipping along with trees collected by Albemarle County at their collection sites. The trees will be mulched and the resulting mulch will be offered to the public at no cost beginning on Monday, January 19, 2026, at Darden Towe Park and Claudius Crozet Park.

Follow-Up Neighborhood Meeting on Greenleaf/Delmar/Oakleaf Intersection

CHARLOTTESVILLE, VA – The City of Charlottesville will host a follow-up neighborhood meeting on January 15, 2026, to continue community discussions regarding traffic and safety concerns at the intersection of Greenleaf Lane, Delmar Drive, and Oakleaf Street. Neighborhood residents are encouraged to attend and participate in this ongoing dialogue.

The meeting will be held from 6:00 PM to 7:00 PM at the Walker Upper Elementary School Cafeteria, located at 1564 Dairy Road. This session will follow the same format as the previous meeting held in September and will provide an opportunity to revisit issues, review updated feedback, and explore potential solutions for the intersection.

Roadway Maintenance Scheduled for Water Street – November 24–26

CHARLOTTESVILLE, VA – The City of Charlottesville Public Works Department will conduct roadway maintenance on Water Street beginning Monday, November 24 through Wednesday, November 26, 2025. This work is part of the City’s ongoing pavement preservation and infrastructure improvement program.

Crews will perform milling, patching, and surface treatment along sections of Water Street between 2nd Street SE and 5th Street SW. Maintenance activities are scheduled daily from 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM.

Traffic & Parking Impacts

• Lane closures and alternating one-way traffic will be in effect during work hours.
• On-street parking along designated sections of Water Street will be temporarily restricted. Signs will be posted 24 hours in advance.
• Drivers should expect minor delays and are encouraged to use nearby routes such as Market Street and Garrett Street.

Pedestrian AccessSidewalks will remain open, though some areas may be briefly rerouted for safety. Pedestrians are asked to follow all posted signage and instructions from work crews.

Transit RoutesAll Transit (CAT) routes will be maintained during the duration of this work.

City of Charlottesville Partners With Precision Safe Sidewalks to Eliminate Trip Hazards and Improve Pedestrian Safety

CHARLOTTESVILLE, VA – The City of Charlottesville is partnering with Precision Safe Sidewalks to improve accessibility and safety across the City's sidewalk network. Beginning this month, citywide repairs will be performed utilizing a horizontal saw cutting process to remove trip hazards caused by vertical height displacement between concrete sidewalk panels. The project will continue the City's commitment to meet Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) requirements for accessible routes and to improve walkability in neighborhoods, business districts, and other public areas.

The work, which is scheduled to begin on November 18, will present minimal disruptions compared to more traditional concrete repair methods as the existing concrete is preserved - grinding down uneven surfaces to create a smooth compliant slope for safer travel. This environmentally friendly approach reduces waste, avoids costly replacement, and restores safe pedestrian access more efficiently.

What to Expect:

• Crews will move block by block through designated areas of the City.
• At each location, 10–15 sidewalk panels will be temporarily closed for approximately 10–15 minutes each.
• During active work, residents and businesses can expect brief noise and minimal dust.
• Work zones will be clearly marked, and pedestrian detours will be provided as needed.
• Crews will continue progressing rapidly through the right-of-way to minimize disruption.

Traffic Advisory: Route 250 at Park Street

CHARLOTTESVILLE, VA – Tri-State Utilities, a contractor for the Department of Utilities, will be performing planned sanitary sewer maintenance work in the westbound lanes of Route 250 in the vicinity of the Park Street ramps starting at 8:00 PM October 30 until October 31 at 5:00 AM. 

We understand that this is in close proximity to residential areas, and there may be some noise associated with this work, but every attempt will be made to keep any disruption to a minimum.

Leaf Collection to Begin October 27

CHARLOTTESVILLE, VA – Leaf season is quickly approaching! Collections start on Monday, October 27 and each neighborhood will be visited by vacuum trucks three times during the season on a set rotating schedule.

Key Highlights:

• Residents can sign up for text alerts reminding them of when their collection week is coming up by texting their address to 434-771-0251
• Leaves will be collected loose at the curb (no bags)
• A drop-off location is also available on Saturdays for residents to utilize
• Leaves are brought to a local farm for composting, which reduces greenhouse gas emissions and improves local soils

Where to Rake Leaves for Collection:Loose leaves will be collected at the curbside. Residents should pile un-bagged leaves as close to the curbside/street as possible without blocking the travel way for pedestrians, bicycles, or motor vehicles.  On-street parking areas can be used for leaves. City Curbside Trash and Recycling Guidelines Reminder

CHARLOTTESVILLE, VA – The City of Charlottesville Public Works Department would like to remind community members who utilize City service for trash and/or recycling collection of container placement guidelines to minimize service disruptions and help promote accessibility across the City. Trash and Recycling containers need to be placed at the curb no later than 7:00 AM on your trash and recycling day to ensure collection occurs. Placement of containers by 7:00 AM guarantees collection on your assigned day, but not a specific time. 

Although collection trucks may generally service your area around specific periods of time, adjustments to the collection operation can occur which can alter the time of day. Containers need to be removed from the curb no more than 12 hours after they have been collected. Please do not place containers in locations that may cause accessibility concerns, such as on sidewalks, on or around curb ramps, or in bike lanes. Barracks Streetscape Project Update Meeting

Traffic Advisory: Water Main Construction – Locust Avenue

CHARLOTTESVILLE, VA – Ongoing water main construction within Locust Avenue is progressing northward resulting in a shift of the daily road closure. The relocated closure will be located between Sycamore and Poplar Streets between 8:30 AM and 3:30 PM daily beginning July 21 (weather permitting).

Expect a temporary road closure and detours to be in place during these times. Pedestrian access will be maintained but will have access to alternate sides of the street based on physical location of work. Motorists are advised to expect delays and avoid the area if possible. Virginia Department of Transportation to Host Open House for Various Project Proposals

CHARLOTTESVILLE, VA – The Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) has scheduled a Public Hearing to allow citizens the opportunity to review plans for a proposed bundle of projects along Fontaine Avenue and Hydraulic Road on Thursday, May 22 from 5:00 to 7:00 PM at the Virginia Department of Forestry (900 Natural Resources Drive, Suite 800, Charlottesville, VA). 

These proposals aim to improve safety, pedestrian accommodations, and travel efficiency at the US 29 Bypass at Fontaine Avenue, at the roundabout of Hydraulic Road and District Avenue, and improve the overall streetscape of Fontaine Avenue.  

The meeting will be an informal open house for citizens to connect with City and VDOT staff. Representatives from VDOT will be available to answer questions and receive both verbal and written comments from the community.

2024-2025 Christmas & Seasonal Tree Recycling

CHARLOTTESVILLE, VA – Christmas and seasonal tree pick-up service will be the week of January 13th, 2025.

Trees must be at the curb by 7:00 AM on Monday, January 13th for collection that week. Trees must be free of ALL decorations, stands and nails. This program is for Christmas and seasonal trees only. No yard waste will be collected.

As in years past, trees will be taken to Darden Towe Park for chipping along with trees collected by Albemarle County at their collection sites. The trees will be mulched and the resulting mulch will be offered to the public at no cost beginning on Monday, January 20, 2025, at Darden Towe Park and Claudius Crozet Park.

Charlottesville’s Climate Action Plan is now available online and will be presented to City Council at the Monday, October 3, 2022 work session! Council work sessions begin at 4:00 pm, and more information can be accessed at the City Council Meetings webpage. 

Using a multi-layered approach to gather input from community members, organizations, stakeholders, and City staff, development of the Climate Action Plan began in Fall 2020/Winter 2021 and resumed in Spring 2022. The plan builds upon past work of the City’s Climate Program and provides a strategic framework to guide City and community actions to achieve our greenhouse gas (GHG) reduction goals of 45% by 2030 and carbon neutrality by 2050.  

The Plan provides contextual and background information about GHG emissions in Charlottesville and identifies emissions reduction strategies for both community activities and municipal operations. More specifics are addressed within each area, including buildings and energy, transportation, and waste, among others. Each section presents strategies to guide the focus of actions as well as key actions to be taken within the next 3 to 5 years to keep Charlottesville on the path to our emissions reduction goals. 

While this plan focuses on reducing GHG emissions, Charlottesville is also developing a Climate Adaptation Plan. Updates on these plans and future activities will be posted via Climate Action News Flashes.
