Inclement Weather Policy
The purpose of the policy is to formally establish the cancellation procedures Charlottesville Parks & Recreation utilizes in the event of inclement weather.
To ensure safety, it is the policy of the Charlottesville Parks & Recreation Department that during inclement weather or in weather-related emergencies, Charlottesville Parks & Recreation programs, events, classes, and rentals at Charlottesville Parks & Recreation facilities may be cancelled and/or facility operating schedules adjusted. The Director of Charlottesville Parks & Recreation or their designee shall be responsible for such decisions based upon the procedures outlined herein; and reserves the right to override any procedure to ensure patron and staff safety.
- Inclement Weather - Severe or harsh weather that may cause a disruption in the delivery or availability of Charlottesville Parks & Recreation:
- Inclement Weather Hotline - A telephone hotline that is updated by Parks and Recreation staff that participants may call to receive updates regarding the status of programs, facilities, events, classes, and rentals. The hotline number is (434) 970-3593.
- Winter Storm Warning - A Winter Storm Warning as issued by the National Weather Service anticipating 4 or more inches of snow or sleet is expected in the next 12 hours, or 6 or more inches in 24 hours, or 1/4 inch or more of ice accretion is expected.
- Winter Storm Watch - A Winter Storm Watch as issued by the National Weather Service to provide 12 to 36 hours notice of the possibility of severe winter weather.
Charlottesville Parks and Recreation will make the determination to close facilities and cancel programs based upon weather and travel conditions to ensure participant and staff safety at all times. The following situations shall lead to adjustments to service delivery:
Charlottesville Government Offices Are Closed
If the City of Charlottesville government offices close for business: All Charlottesville Parks and Recreation facilities, programs, events, and rentals are cancelled for the duration of such closure(s).
Charlottesville Public Schools Are Closed
If the City of Charlottesville public schools are closed all day: All registered programs and events are cancelled for the day. Carver Recreation Center and Smith Aquatic and Fitness Center open at 10:00 am and close on a regular schedule. Recreation centers at Westhaven, Friendship Court, South First Street and Greenstone on 5th will be closed.
All other facilities will operate with regular hours. Private rentals may occur at Carver Recreation Center, Smith Aquatic and Fitness Center or the Key Recreation Center during the modified hours at the discretion of the Director or their designee.
Charlottesville Public Schools on Delayed Schedule
If the City of Charlottesville public schools open on a delayed schedule: All Charlottesville Parks and Recreation facilities and offices will be open for regular business hours. All Charlottesville Parks & Recreation registered programs, classes, events and rentals beginning before 10:00 am are cancelled; those beginning at 10:00 am or later will operate as scheduled.
Charlottesville Public Schools Close Two Hours Early
If the City of Charlottesville public schools close two hours early: All registered Charlottesville Parks and Recreation programs, classes and events beginning after 2:00 pm are cancelled; those beginning before 2:00 pm will operate as scheduled. All Charlottesville Parks and Recreation facilities and offices will operate as normal unless otherwise directed. Recreation centers at Westhaven, Friendship Court, South First Street, and Greenstone on 5th will be closed.
No Early Dismissal - After-School & Evening Activities Canceled
If the City of Charlottesville public schools do not dismiss early but cancel all after-school and evening activities: All Charlottesville Parks & Recreation n registered programs, classes, events and rentals will end at 3:00 pm. All Charlottesville Parks & Recreation facilities and offices will close at regular operating hours.
Albemarle County Public Schools Closure
If Albemarle County Public Schools (ACPS) close: All Charlottesville Parks and Recreation programs, classes and events occurring at or within Albemarle County Schools are cancelled. Note that such closure will not affect Charlottesville Parks and Recreation programs, classes and events occurring at Charlottesville Parks and Recreation Facilities or City Schools.
Inclement Weather on a Non-School Day or Time
In the event of inclement weather when city schools are not in session or on a non-school day: The Director of Charlottesville Parks & Recreation reserves the right to cancel programs and close facilities should weather conditions warrant to ensure patron and staff safety.
Winter Storm Warning
In the event a Winter Storm Warning is issued: The Director of Charlottesville Parks & Recreation t reserves the right to cancel programs and close facilities in advance if a Winter Storm Warning is issued.
Charlottesville Parks & Recreation will communicate all facility closures and program cancellations and updates due to inclement weather at the earliest convenience, notifying patrons, staff and the City Office of Communications thereof.
