CFD Firework Safety Public Service Announcement

CHARLOTTESVILLE, VA — As Independence Day approaches, the Charlottesville Fire Department (CFD) reminds residents that all fireworks are illegal within the City of Charlottesville, regardless of their legality in surrounding counties.

While fireworks can be entertaining and festive, they also pose serious risks. In jurisdictions where fireworks are permitted, CFD urges individuals to follow strict safety protocols. Always extinguish used fireworks completely—preferably by submerging them in water before disposal. Additionally, please be considerate of your neighbors. Loud noises from fireworks can be especially distressing for individuals with PTSD and other sensory-related conditions.

If you are planning a public fireworks display within city limits, you must obtain a permit. Upon proper application, the Fire Chief may authorize the use of designated public parks or open spaces for pyrotechnic displays. Any permits issued will include restrictions deemed necessary to safeguard life and property.

You can also experience a dazzling Fourth without lighting a single fuse. This year, the City of Charlottesville, in partnership with local community organizations, is proud to once again present the C’ville Spectacular Fireworks Display atop Carter Mountain. The show will begin at 9 PM, and thanks to its elevated location, can be enjoyed from multiple vantage points throughout the area.

Fireworks are meant to celebrate our nation's independence—but safety must always come first. Improper or illegal use of fireworks that results in injury, death, or property damage may lead to civil or criminal penalties.

The Charlottesville Fire Department is committed to protecting our community. We encourage everyone to celebrate safely and responsibly. Let’s work together to ensure a joyful and accident-free Fourth of July.
