Also, a Personal History Questionnaire (PHQ) must be completed in consideration of employment. The PHQ must be submitted when contacted by the department. Please complete the PHQ ahead of time, so it will be ready for submission by the deadline when requested.

Accepting Lateral Firefighter/EMTs
Firefighters who are currently certified at the firefighter level I (IFSAC or ProBoard) and Medics (NREMT or commonwealth of Virginia) at a career fire department with 12 months of experience will be considered lateral firefighters. Upon hire, lateral firefighters will participate in a two-week orientation process instead of a full academy. Out-of-state hires will need to seek reciprocity.
Emergency Response
In addition to fire suppression and prevention, we provide emergency response for the City of Charlottesville and the University of Virginia, including various types of calls:
- Hazardous Materials
- Medical
- Public Service Calls
- Special & Technical Rescue Situations
- Vehicle Crashes

Shifts
Our operations teams are assigned to one of three shifts - A, B, or C - and normally work a 56-hour workweek consisting of three 24-hour shifts (7 am to 7 am the following day) every nine days.
Charlottesville Volunteer Fire Company
Our team includes several volunteers who work with our full-time members to provide fire suppression and emergency response support.

You must be at least 18 years of age. Volunteer applicants will be subject to a physical exam and drug screening. To become a member of the Charlottesville Volunteer FireCompany:

- Present your completed application in person at the Charlottesville Volunteer Fire Company's regular monthly meeting
