Accepting Lateral Firefighter/EMTs
Firefighters who are currently certified at the firefighter level I (IFSAC or ProBoard) and Medics (NREMT or commonwealth of Virginia) at a career fire department with 12 months of experience will be considered lateral firefighters. Upon hire, lateral firefighters will participate in a two-week orientation process instead of a full academy. Out-of-state hires will need to seek reciprocity.
In addition to fire suppression and prevention, we provide emergency response for the City of Charlottesville and the University of Virginia, including various types of calls:
- Hazardous Materials
- Public Service Calls
- Special & Technical Rescue Situations
- Vehicle Crashes
The fiscal year 2021
5,717 | Total Calls for Service
3,612 | Medical Calls
2,105 | Fire & Other Calls
Our operations teams are assigned to one of three shifts - A, B, or C - and normally work a 56-hour workweek consisting of three 24-hour shifts (7 am to 7 am the following day) every nine days.
