About Us
The Capital Development Division is responsible for the planning, design, and construction of capital improvement projects across Charlottesville. This division integrates transportation infrastructure and public facilities development into one cohesive team, ensuring a streamlined approach to managing city assets.
We oversee public building projects and transportation initiatives, including bicycle and pedestrian improvements, multimodal roadway projects, and large-scale facility upgrades.
Our Responsibilities
The Capital Development Division handles all aspects of capital projects, from initial planning to final construction. Key areas of responsibility include:
🚦 Transportation Infrastructure
- Project Management – Overseeing transportation projects from planning to completion.
- Multimodal Transportation Project Management– Building infrastructure for pedestrians, cyclists, transit, and vehicles.
- Capital Improvement Project (CIP) Development – Planning and executing transportation infrastructure improvements.
🏛️ Public Facilities Development
- Capital Project Planning & Management – Designing and constructing new city facilities and infrastructure.
- Facility Condition Assessments – Evaluating existing city-owned buildings for maintenance and improvements.
- Space Management & Facility Programming – Optimizing city facilities to meet community needs.
- Life Cycle Planning – Ensuring long-term sustainability and efficiency of city-owned properties.
- School & Public Building Oversight– Managing renovations and construction for City’s portfolio of buildings including:
- City Hall & Annex
- Libraries
- Fire Stations
- Court Facilities
- Transit Facilities
- Parking Garages
- Charlottesville City Schools (all campuses)
