City to Host Open House and Collect Feedback for 5th Street SW Road Diet & Bike Way Project

CHARLOTTESVILLE, VA – In an effort to make 5th Street SW a safer corridor for all mode types, the City of Charlottesville is hosting an open house on Wednesday, April 9 at 5:30 PM in the Jackson Via Elementary School gymnasium to present various safety options and collect community feedback.

In 2015, the City’s Bicycle and Pedestrian Master Plan recommended protected bike lanes along 5th Street SW, south of Cherry Avenue. Since that time, the corridor has seen continued unsafe high-speed conditions, leading to several fatalities.

Using low-cost materials, this project allows for adjustments based on performance. Your feedback will help determine the shape of the bikeway at several key locations, including the Cherry Avenue/Elliot Avenue intersection, Harris Road, and Cleveland Road.

The community is encouraged to study the various proposals on the project’s webpage HERE (link) and fill out the survey indicating their preferences HERE (link).

City staff will explain each option in detail with visuals during the open house on April 9. Attendees will have an opportunity to fill out the survey then, as well.
