City of Charlottesville to Celebrate Accessibility Enhancements at Jordan Park
CHARLOTTESVILLE, VA – On Thursday, April 10, at 4 PM, the City of Charlottesville will host a ribbon-cutting ceremony to celebrate the completion of accessibility improvements at Jordan Park.
As part of this project, the City’s Parks & Recreation department replaced deteriorating pathways with more than 3,400 square feet of new, accessible pathways. These upgrades provide a smooth connection from the park’s Sixth Street entrance to key amenities, including two playgrounds, a basketball court, and a newly constructed pedestrian bridge along the Moores Creek trail network. The project involved significant excavation and the addition of gravel to improve drainage and ensure long-term durability.
“The bridge now allows users of the Moores Creek trail to cross the tributary to access the trails west of Jordan Park playground and basketball courts and continue towards 5th Street,” said Trails Planner Chris Gensic. “The Rivanna Trails Foundation footpath used to cross the creek with a rock hop.”
Special attention was given to ensuring a seamless and barrier-free transition between the new paved pathway and the pedestrian bridge. This enhancement strengthens connections between Jordan Park, the Belmont and Ridge Street neighborhoods, and the growing Moores Creek trail network. With these improvements, pedestrians now have expanded access to areas as far as 5th Street Station.
City officials and dignitaries will mark the occasion with brief remarks and a ceremonial ribbon cutting. The City invites the community to join in the celebration and enjoy Jordan Park’s improved accessibility and amenities.
