CHARLOTTESVILLE, VA – Leon Henry joined the City of Charlottesville on Monday, February 3rd, as Director of Social Services. Leon comes to the City from UVA Health (University of Virginia Health), where he most recently worked as the Manager of Clinical Social Work. Over the course of his time there, he was responsible for managing a department of 70 clinical social workers and two supervisors to collaborate with departments throughout the medical center and community to ensure resources were being used to meet needs in the most impactful way possible. He has also held roles at UVA Health as a Clinical Social Work Supervisor and Psychotherapist. Additionally, Mr. Henry has over 13 years of child welfare experience with the Department of Children and Families in Massachusetts.

Leadership is important to Mr. Henry and is the foundation of his work. He completed the Cornerstone Leadership Program at the University of Virginia (UVA), the Health Leadership Institute of UVA’s Medical Center Leadership Program, and he’s a member of the Leaders Lab of Greater Charlottesville. His leadership skills have allowed him to follow his passion and focus on fatherhood engagement. He is committed to supporting fathers and helping them to be the best versions of themselves and be better involved in their family dynamics. He helps fathers connect those dots, stay informed, and find the necessary resources to be the best parent they can be.

“I always lead with my heart and choose to use my voice in times that are difficult or when others don’t always feel comfortable speaking up,” Leon said. He added, “I want to help children and families break down barriers to create opportunities for people so they can have progressive lives that they can be proud of. I will always meet people where they are and be creative when it comes to problem solving. When you stay curious, anything is possible.”

Mr. Henry was raised in the Bronx, NY which had a large impact on his career path. He is a Licensed Clinical Social Worker (LCSW) and holds a Bachelor’s degree in Wellness Management from Oswego State University and a Master’s degree in Social Work from Westfield State University.
