Applications Open for Human Rights Commission  

CHARLOTTESVILLE, VA –  The Charlottesville Human Rights Commission (HRC) has two upcoming vacancies and encourages those with significant ties to the Charlottesville community and an interest in civil rights to apply.  

The Human Rights Commission is a volunteer group of individuals appointed by City Council to act as a strong advocate for justice and equal opportunity by providing citywide leadership and guidance in the area of civil and human rights. The HRC also provides recommendations to City Council regarding local and state-level policies and engages with the public.  

Commissioners are currently focusing their work on housing in Charlottesville. The HRC uses its public platform to discuss topics ranging from state-level legislation affecting housing affordability and accessibility to local topics such as supports for people experiencing homelessness. Commissioners use information gathered from engagement with community members and other experts to present recommendations to City Council.  

Individuals interested in serving on the Human Rights Commission should apply through the City's Boards and Commissions Vacancies webpage by February 1st,  2025 at 5 PM. Applicants are encouraged to attend the upcoming Human Rights Commission Meeting on December 19th and to review the Human Rights Commissioner Service Description linked below to learn more about the time commitments and responsibilities of Commission service.
