Circuit Court Celebrates 10th Anniversary of Charlottesville’s First LGBTQ+ Marriage

CHARLOTTESVILLE, VA – Circuit Court Judge Claude V. Worrell and the Circuit Court Clerk Llezelle Dugger invite the community to commemorate and celebrate the 10th anniversary of the first legal same sex marriage licenses issued in the City of Charlottesville at the Circuit Court (315 East High Street) on Sunday, October 6, from 3-4 PM.

Following the commemoration, there will be an afterparty from 5-8 PM at Firefly Restaurant, where attendees can celebrate love with food, music, games, and more.

The first same sex marriage in Charlottesville was officiated 10 years ago on October 6th by Llezelle Dugger, with vows exchanged between André Hakes and Catherine Gillespie just minutes after the Fourth Circuit Court of Appeals in Richmond made gay marriage legal in Virginia.

LGBTQ+ members and allies alike are encouraged to join in celebrating this landmark occasion for the Charlottesville community.
