Rivanna Water & Sewer Authority Receives Grant Award

CHARLOTTESVILLE, VA – The Rivanna Water and Sewer Authority (RWSA) is pleased to announce that it has received a grant from the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) and the Virginia Department of Emergency Management in the amount of $198,930 for a “Flood Protection Resiliency Design and Scoping Study”.

Funding for this grant was provided through the federal “Building Resilient Infrastructure and Communities” (BRIC) Program. The BRIC program encourages and supports communities to become more resilient by proactively preparing for natural and other disasters. The federal funding for this program was allocated to FEMA through the “Bipartisan Infrastructure Law” passed by Congress in November 2021. The study will identify ways to protect three RWSA wastewater treatment plants (Moores Creek, Glenmore, and Scottsville), two wastewater pumping facilities (Crozet #2 and Mechums River) and one wastewater storage tank in Crozet.

RWSA Executive Director, Bill Mawyer, stated, “Due to changing climate conditions, precipitation is predicted to be less frequent but in higher intensity, which may create a greater chance of flooding at lower elevations. This engineering study will help us protect our wastewater facilities and maintain essential utility services for our community during significant flooding events.”
