Human Rights Commission Seeking Public Input
CHARLOTTESVILLE, VA – The Human Rights Commission (HRC) invites you to complete a public survey to share which topics related to civil and human rights are most important for the community at this time. Commissioners will use community members’ responses to this survey to help them decide what issues to focus their work on this year.
The HRC is a volunteer group of community members that advises City Council on topics related to civil and human rights in Charlottesville. The HRC also provides recommendations to City Council for changes to state law and local law that may help promote and protect human rights in Charlottesville for all community members. For the past few years, the Human Rights Commission has selected housing affordability and stability as primary focus areas. Commissioners conducted several initiatives centered around preserving and increasing affordability and accessibility of housing. These included attending meetings of local housing organizations, hosting experts to discuss needs in the community, and writing recommendations for City Council.
Those who complete the survey can choose a priority from a list of possible topics identified by current members of the HRC or offer a new idea related to the mission of the HRC. The HRC commits to considering ideas presented by the public carefully as it plans its work for the coming year.
The survey will close at midnight on Monday, February 23.
To complete the survey, visit the link for your language before midnight on February 23, 2026. Please contact the Office of Human Rights at humanrights@charlottesville.gov for language access assistance or call 434-970-3115.
