CPD Completes Investigation of Fatal Pedestrian Accident

CHARLOTTESVILLE, VA – Officers with Charlottesville’s Traffic Unit have completed their investigation into a fatal pedestrian accident on Elliott Avenue on October 3, 2024. The investigation revealed that at approximately 7:30 PM, Mamawa Simai was walking northbound in a crosswalk marked only with zebra stripes. The area was poorly lit and had no signage or flashing lights indicating a pedestrian crossing. Matthew Kozub was traveling eastbound when he struck Ms. Simai. Mr. Kozub remained on-scene and immediately called 911. Tragically, Ms. Simai was pronounced deceased after being transported to the UVA Medical Center. There is no evidence that speed, drugs, alcohol or cellphone usage were factors in the crash.

Mr. Kozub has been charged with failing to yield to a pedestrian in a crosswalk, a violation of Virginia Code Section 46.2-924. He was served with a permitted warrant and his next court date is November 8 at 9:00 AM.
