A Statement on the Passing of Cole Hendrix, Former Charlottesville City Manager
Charlottesville City Government is saddened to report that Mr. Cole Hendrix, City Manager of Charlottesville from 1971-1996, passed away last evening. Recognized as an excellent City Manager, Cole Hendrix served here for 25 years.

Most notable among his many accomplishments was his championing of the Downtown Mall even though it was not an idea that was universally supported. Cole Hendrix saw the Downtown Mall as an economic generator that would stem the decline of downtown, and he was right.
During his tenure he provided stable, professional management and leadership, and mentored many young public administrators. He and his wife Janet continued to be part of our community after his retirement. Cole will be remembered for being a stable anchor in our history.
The entire Charlottesville City Government offers condolences to his wife Janet and the entire Cole Hendrix family. Cole will be missed but will be remembered for his many contributions to our city.
