Important Safety Tips in Preparation for Extreme Heat Advisory

CHARLOTTESVILLE, VA – The National Weather Service has issued an extreme heat advisory for Tuesday from 11AM to 9PM. In response, the City of Charlottesville would like to share important safety tips to help keep you and your loved ones prepared.

When extreme heat is coupled with conditions such as high humidity, sun exposure, stagnant air, and poor air quality, this can be cause for health concern. Some groups face a greater risk of heat-related illness than others. Pregnant women, outdoor workers, athletes, individuals with mobility impairments, individuals living with chronic illness or a disability, small children, and the elderly should exercise extra caution when engaging in outdoor activities or planning travel plans.

To stay cool and combat the heat, follow these important safety tips:

  • As much as you can, keep children out of direct sun.
  • Move outdoor activities to the morning and evening rather than middle of the day.
  • Stay hydrated, wear loose and light clothing, and practice sun safety (including wearing sunscreen).
  • Do not stay home alone during a summer power outage or an extreme heat event.
  • Make sure a trusted friend or relative has an extra key to your home, knows where you keep your emergency supplies and can use lifesaving equipment or administer medicine.
  • Drink fluids regularly to avoid getting dehydrated and overheated. Talk to your doctor about whether you need fluids with extra electrolytes in the heat.
  • Be careful with the amount of time you spend outdoors. Take frequent breaks to come back inside, cool off, and drink fluids that don’t have caffeine.

Use these Dos and Don’ts as a baseline for making decisions around the heat. If you feel that you have been exposed for too long, please utilize the following cooling centers in the City of Charlottesville:
