[ARCHIVED] SCAM ALERT: Callers Posing as Police Officers, Demand Money for Missing Court Date

updated news flash image

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

October 30, 2020

The City of Charlottesville Police Department and Sheriff’s Office are warning citizens of a phone scam involving callers posing as Charlottesville police officers and/or detectives.

Both agencies have received recent reports of phone calls related to “missed court appearances.”  Some of the callers are using computer software to “spoof” their actual phone numbers, making it appear as if you are receiving a call from a local phone number.

The caller identifies themselves as a local police officer and/or detective and informs people they have missed a subpoena or didn't show up for a court date.  If the calls go unanswered, they may leave a voice message and a phone number to call back.

The caller frequently uses intimidation tactics such as the threat of immediate arrest for non-compliance, and they will attempt to persuade you to purchase gift cards as payment to resolve the situation.

If you receive a call consistent with this scam, please hang up immediately and call the non-emergency number to our regional Emergency Communications Center at (434) 977-9041, or call 911 if you believe it to be a more urgent matter.

A dispatcher will make sure a police officer takes a report directly from you. A police officer may call you back, but they will never demand money from you or ask for your financial information over the phone.
