CFD Responds to Apartment Fire Caused by Lithium-Ion Battery Pack Malfunction

CHARLOTTESVILLE, VA - The Charlottesville Fire Department (CFD) responded to an apartment fire at 758 Madison Ave on January 22, 2024.

The fire was contained to a single bedroom within the apartment complex and was quickly extinguished by firefighters.

Upon investigation by the Fire Marshal’s Office, it was determined that the accidental fire was caused by a malfunction of a lithium-ion battery pack. These batteries, found in many devices, can catch fire or explode if damaged or not used correctly. Users of these devices should always follow the manufacturer's recommendations when using and charging lithium-ion battery packs.

CFD would like to remind residents to exercise caution when using electronic devices and ensure that any lithium-ion battery packs are handled safely and correctly. If you suspect that a battery pack is damaged, do not use it and contact the manufacturer for further instructions.
