Charlottesville Police Department (CPD) Investigates Homicide Near Elliewood Avenue

 

CHARLOTTESVILLE, VA – On Saturday, March 18, 2023 at approximately 5:31 a.m., the victim, 26-year-old Charlottesville resident Cody Brian Smith passed away from his wounds.

 

The shooting occurred early this morning in the parking lot near Elliewood Avenue and involved the victim, 26-year-old Cody Brian Smith, and an unidentified shooter. A vehicle, described as a silver, four-door sedan may have been involved.

This is an active investigation; anyone with information regarding this incident is asked to contact Detective Raines, CPD Criminal Investigations Division at (434) 970-3266 or submit an anonymous tip by calling Crime Stoppers Tip Line at (434) 977-4000.

UPDATE 3/20/2023 | 7:00 P.M.


On Monday, March 20, 2023, Charlottesville detectives executed multiple search warrants in Charlottesville and Albemarle County in reference to the murder of Cody Brian Smith. 

As a result, 21-year-old Charlottesville resident, Mr. Lakori Brooks, was arrested and charged with 2nd degree murder and the use of a firearm in the commission of a felony.

We would like to thank the Charlottesville community, the Charlottesville Commonwealth Attorney’s Office, the University of Virginia Police Department, and the Albemarle County Police Department for working together to bring justice to the family of Cody Smith.
