CFD Third Annual Girls Fire & EMS Camp Begins Next Week
CHARLOTTESVILLE, VA - The Charlottesville Fire Department (CFD) will host its Girls Fire & EMS Camp to Inspire women to seek career opportunities in the fire service.
CFD's Girls Fire & EMS Camp Inspire will begin next week. The camp aims to empower and inspire young women to pursue a career in the fire service. The three-day camp will take place on Wednesday, June 26th to Friday, June 28th, from 8:00 AM to 3:00 PM. It is free and open to City of Charlottesville students, rising grades 7-12.
The camp has been part of the CFD's effort to increase diversity throughout the department. According to the National Fire Protection Agency, out of the estimated 1,041,200 firefighters worldwide, women only make up nine percent of that total.
During the three-day camp, young women will understand the steps to become a firefighter/EMT, learn how to provide CPR, tour a local hospital, the Albemarle Charlottesville Communications Center (911 Dispatch), and participate in Fire/EMS simulations. The camp will provide mentorship, instill confidence, and strengthen leadership skills.
The camp has gained support from various stakeholders including community organizations and non-profits like the UVA Equity Center, the Albemarle Charlottesville Chapter of the NAACP, and Sentara Martha Jefferson. This diverse support network brings valuable resources, expertise, and community engagement to the camp, potentially enhancing its impact and outreach. A graduation ceremony will be held on Friday at 3 PM.
