CPD Resumes Response to Non-Emergency Calls for Service
CHARLOTTESVILLE, VA - The Charlottesville Police Department will be resuming the response to certain calls for service that were suspended in late 2021 due to staffing shortages.
In late 2021, the Charlottesville Police Department suspended its response to calls for service that were not deemed an “emergency". This included credit card fraud, larcenies, and vandalism. The decision was made in response to what was described as a “staffing emergency.”
Over the last 16 months, the police department has made significant strides in filling sworn vacancies. This now allows the police department to respond to non-emergency calls for service.
Chief Kochis stated, “Police presence is not just about responding to emergencies; it's about being a visible and proactive part of the community. By being present in times other than in crisis, police officers can help create safer, more connected, and resilient communities."
Effective June 1, 2024, Officers will resume their response to the following non-emergency incidents in person:
- Credit card fraud
- False Pretense
- Impersonation
- Larceny from buildings
- Larceny from Vehicles
- Larceny of vehicle parts
- Vandalism
- Lost property
