Education
Sheriff James E Brown, III grew up in Charlottesville and is a product of
the Charlottesville City Public Schools. He graduated from Charlottesville High School in 1988 with an Advanced Studies Diploma, then attended Longwood College and graduated in May of 1992 with a B.A. in Pre-Law with a focus on Criminal Justice. In June 2012, he earned a Graduate Certificate in Public Administration from the University of Virginia.
Previous Employment
Sheriff Brown has spent his entire career since 1993 serving the community in diverse aspects of the Criminal Justice field. He started his career with Offender Aid and Restoration as a Pretrial Investigator and Local Probation Officer. Sheriff Brown also worked as a Deputy Clerk in General District Court and just prior to being elected to serve as Sheriff, he worked for 6 years as an Albemarle County Police Officer.
Role
Since taking over as Sheriff on January 1st, 2010, Sheriff Brown has:
- Greatly improved internal security in General District and both internal and external security in Circuit Court
- Implemented a Department of Criminal Justice Services based policy manual
- Increased Office involvement in the community
- Introduced hybrid vehicles to the Sheriff's Office fleet
- Provided women's self-defense classes
The Sheriff's Office has worked with various youth-based organizations and the local and regional TRIAD programs for seniors. Sheriff Brown strives to lead by example and wants to help make Charlottesville a better place for all of its citizens and visitors.
