CFD Fire Engine Headed to Sister City

Charlottesville Fire Department

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
November 22, 2021

CHARLOTTESVILLE, VA - The Charlottesville Fire Department is donating a fire truck to Charlottesville's sister city Winneba, Ghana.

The fire engine is a 2003 Pierce Quantum that was a critical part of the Charlottesville Fire Department’s fleet of equipment, providing our city with nearly 20 years of fire protection. This truck served as Engine 7 and was located at the Ridge Street Fire Station before moving to a reserve engine status.  The fire engine was the first CFD engine to have an electronic onboard foam/firefighting agent proportioning system and served for several years as the hazardous materials response unit. Since becoming a reserve engine, the fire engine filled in for many of the frontline units on a day-to-day basis while those trucks were out for repair.  In the fall of 2020, CFD removed the engine from service. The truck has an estimated value of $25,000.

CFD plans to donate the engine to the Charlottesville Fire Company. The Charlottesville Fire Company in turn plans to donate it to the City of Winneba, Ghana. Through the Sister Cities Commission, Winneba has indicated a desire and a need for this fire truck.

On December 2, join blues legend Corey Harris and his band, along with African dance troupe Chihamba, for an unforgettable benefit show for the Charlottesville-Winneba Foundation. Proceeds from the event will support the costs to ship the fire truck to Africa.  For tickets: https://www.theparamount.net/event/corey-harris/
