CFD Recognizes Burn Awareness Week

CHARLOTTESVILLE, VA - CFD is recognizing Burn Awareness Week and would like to share helpful tips on how to protect and treat yourself when handling flammable liquids.

This year’s emphasis is on flammable liquid burns. Flammable liquids ignite easily and can burn with extreme rapidity. Technically, a flammable liquid is determined by the flash point of the material. Flash point is defined as the temperature in which a particular organic compound gives off sufficient vapor to ignite in air. Gasoline, kerosene, and even cooking oil are good examples of a flammable liquid. Teach children that hot things can burn them.

Follow these helpful gas burn prevention tips:

• Use gasoline outdoors only, and store in cool, well-ventilated areas

• Start charcoal grills only with fluid labeled as “charcoal starter fluid”

• Keep gasoline in a secure location, out of the reach of children

• Use containers that have been listed, labeled, or approved for gasoline

• Fill equipment with gas when engines are cool

• Siphon gasoline by mouth

• Use gasoline near a flame source such as burning leaves or brush

• Induce vomiting if gasoline is swallowed

• Use gasoline as a cleaning fluid or solvent

• Store gasoline in the house

• Dispense gasoline into a portable container while it is located inside the vehicle or pickup truck bed

  1. Smother any flames on clothing and remove the victim from the flame source
  2. Call 911/see medical attention
  3. Cool the burn with COOL (not cold) water to stop the burning process
  4. Remove all clothing from the injured area
  5. Cover the area with a clean dry sheet or bandage
