Summaries of police reports are the first page of the report. Summaries of police reports contain limited information such as: the date, time, general location, the type of incident reported, and the disposition captured during the call for service. Individuals requesting summaries of police reports may obtain a summary if the following criteria are met:
The individual must be the reporting party or victim listed in the report
The individual requesting the report must show a valid photo identification at the Information Management Services counter in the police department lobby.
The individual must obtain the report summary during normal business hours (8 am to 4 pm)
Individuals who are not involved in the police incident subject to the request are not eligible to obtain a summary of a police report.
Pursuant to Virginia Code Section 2.2-3706 (B)(1), full police reports, including officer notes or narratives, are exempt from release under the Virginia Freedom of Information Act.
Pursuant to Virginia Code Section 16.1-301(B)(1), the Charlottesville Police Department cannot release juvenile records of police incidents. In order to obtain a juvenile record, an individual must receive an order from the court having jurisdiction over the matter, even from a parent or legal guardian.
