Captain Victor Mitchell has served the Charlottesville Police Department (CPD) for 34 years, beginning his career here in 1985. Captain Mitchell currently heads the Field Operations Division of the department, which oversees the day-to-day operations of three patrol shifts made up of 72 personnel.
Connection to Law Enforcement
Captain Mitchell has a close connection to the police department, as his father was a chief of police. He started working on a law enforcement career path while in high school. He enlisted in the United States Coast Guard at age 18, and began taking courses in law enforcement. When his career in the military ended, he joined a private police department before joining CPD.
Captain Mitchell started the K-9 program for the department in 1990. Over the course of 19 years, he has handled four dogs. He is also a Master Trainer with the National Association of Professional Canine Handlers.
When he is not busy working, Captain Mitchell works as a master craftsman woodworker. He has designed and built furniture for more than 20 years.
